Racecations season: how marathon travellers are booking 24 hour adventures

Forget shoulder season. October is race season.

Around 23% of the world’s marathons take place in October. More than 42% happen in Autumn. Add the rise of run clubs, fitness influencers and HYROX, and you get a new kind of traveller: someone who flies in for the finish line and stays for everything else.

Meet the racecation. A major race, plus a new city to explore.

And they’re already searching before the starting whistle has even been blown.

The numbers: racecations are booming

In the past year, Google searches for “marathon abroad” climbed 1,255% to an all-time high. Social feeds are full of it too. TikTok is packed with “best places to do HYROX” guides and marathons itineraries, racking up thousands of reviews.

This October alone, Lisbon, Munich, Budapest and Amsterdam host marathons, while HYROX hits Valencia and Hamburg.

Thousands of runners and racers. Thousands of travellers with a few spare hours and a city to discover.

What travellers are searching for

Racers don’t want a week-long holiday. They want to make the most of a short trip. Searches for 24-hour itineraries in autumn host cities have surged:

Search term Increase (past 30 days)
What to do in Hamburg for a day 500%
What to do in Lisbon for a day 400%
What to do in Munich for a day 250%
What to do in Rome for a day 190%
Berlin in a day 119%
24 hours in Budapest 84%
What to do in Amsterdam for a day 70%

(Data accurate as of 1st September 2026)

Hamburg and Lisbon both lead the pack. Both host races in October.

Short trips, big appetite for experiences

The race may be the reason to travel. But it’s the experiences that fill the time around it.

Over the past year, searches for day tours and hands-on activities across Europe’s race cities have jumped:

Search term Increase (past year)
Lisbon cooking class 488%
Budapest day tour 401%
Guided day tour Rome 237%
Valencia walking tour 168%
Berlin city tour 123%
Amsterdam day tour 101%
Rome food tour 94%
Day tour Lisbon 71%

The pattern is clear. Travellers want to move beyond traditional sightseeing. They want to eat, cook, walk and explore like locals, and they want it packaged into a few hours.

It’s bigger than the marathon

Racecations are one piece of a wider trend: micro-cations. Short getaways where travellers squeeze the most out of a destination in a short window.

And the race is just one trigger. Think about who else lands in town for a 24 or 48 hour window with a fixed schedule and a free afternoon:

  • Festival and concert go-ers
  • Sports fans in for a match weekend
  • Conference and tradeshow attendees
  • Run club and fitness groups on a team trip

How to win the racecation (and every micro-cation after it)

Bókun’s Sam Jefferies sums up the opportunity:

“For those taking part in fitness events overseas this Autumn, the race may be the reason to travel, but booking a tour or experience can turn a race trip into a real adventure. Whether it’s a post-race food tour, a two-hour city highlights experience or a relaxed day trip, these experiences allow travellers to immerse themselves in a destination, discover hidden gems and make the most of their limited time.”

Here’s how experience operators can turn that demand into bookings:

Build for short windows

Two-hour city highlights. Half-day trips. Evening food tours. Travellers on a race weekend can’t commit to a full day.

Think post-race

Tired legs want something easy. Relaxed food tours, cooking classes and gentle walking experiences fit perfectly.

Match your marketing to the calendar

Check what’s happening in your city. Name the race in your listing, promote around the dates and use the search terms travellers actually type “24 hours in”, “what to do in [city] for a day”.

Be bookable everywhere racers are looking

Your own website. Online travel agencies. Marketplaces. The easier you are to find and book, the more of that short window you win.

Look beyond the finish line

Every city has events that fill hotels for a weekend. Map them, then build the experiences around them. Autumn marathons are just the start.

Ready, set, book

The race brings them in. The experiences make the trip.

For experience operators in marathon and HYROX cities, that’s a booking opportunity well beyond the summer peak. The travellers are already searching. Your job is to be there when they land.
